Are You Burned Out? Ten Signs That Say Yes

You are tired, fatigued, emotionally exhausted. Sleep isn’t helping, and vacations haven’t helped. No matter how hard you try, you come to Sundays with the dreads. You don’t want to face another week of work. Your desire to “lean in” has fallen off the cliff. How do you know what you are facing so you can get out of your personal work desert? Walk through this list. Tally your YESes. The higher the score, the higher the probability you are either heading toward burned out or baking in an oven of it.
  1. Are you feeling drained, tired, and emotionally overwhelmed most of the time, even after plenty of rest?
  2. Is your performance and productivity declining? Are you struggling to focus and complete tasks?
  3. Are you developing a negative attitude towards work? Are you withdrawing from social interactions at the workplace?
  4. Have you lost interest and enthusiasm for the job, and once exciting tasks have become tedious and unappealing?
  5. Are you becoming more easily frustrated, impatient, or short-tempered with others?
  6. Are you ignoring your personal well-being, neglecting your favorite hobbies, and experiencing disrupted sleep patterns?
  7. Do you feel a sense of ineffectiveness or feel like no matter how hard you try, you can't make a difference or achieve success?
  8. Do you have high levels of chronic stress that affect not only your work but also your personal life?
  9. Are you taking more sick days or time off due to feelings of burnout?
  10. Have you turned to unhealthy habits like excessive drinking, overeating, or substance abuse to cope with the burnout?
If your score is over 4, you are likely in full-on burnout or well on your way there. So now what? Stopping the burnout cycle means getting out of your own way by seeking outside support. Self-awareness is a great thing; when we are depleted, our thoughts become distorted. An outside viewpoint helps us see our own contorted viewpoints and see things more clearly.
  1. Let your journal be your mirror. Morning Pages are a great way to start if you are a novice at hearing your thoughts by writing them down.
  2. Move your body with a friend (in person or from a distance) for a run-and-talk or walk-and-talk.
  3. Dive into Burnout (for women) by identical twins and co-authors, Emily & Amelia Nagoski. You can get a taste for their approach with a video diving into The Cure for Burnout with TED.
  4. Take our assessment to get started. Talking with our team is a zero-risk, 100%-support offer.
We cannot wait to get to know you. We are here when you are ready.

The Trade You're Making

A monthly live workshop

Every decision you have made was a trade. The useful question is not what went wrong. It is what you are trading right now, and whether that is still a trade you would choose.

The Alignment Lab meets monthly. This article pairs with the session above; read it beforehand, or bring what it stirred up with you.
